About Our Featured Guest Speaker
Over five years ago, Velvet Lattimore made a decision to have a baby. She was tired of nurturing other people’s fashion dreams and gave birth to her own. She named her baby, Vedazzling Accessories Boutique, and it’s become the go to place for interesting and captivating pieces. Located at 145 Front Street in the heart of DUMBO, Brooklyn, Vedazzling Accessories is also a retail platform for emerging Black accessories designers. “This industry is cut throat and it is especially hard on African Americans who are typically undercapitalized and have difficulty securing orders from mainstream retailers,” admits Velvet.

So, to some degree, she still nurtures other peoples’ dreams, but now she simultaneously nurtures hers, too. Part cheerleader and part den mother, Velvet’s style is to guide the designers she carries so that they achieve a greater sell-through. She has also recently opened the boutique as a Pop-Up Shop venue which allows designers to get first hand feedback from customers.

With her resumé brimming with fashion industry job experience from production to marketing, Velvet also created her own handbag line – The Vedazzling Collection. Constructed of high quality leathers with pristine finishes, her bags are available at a mid-tier price point at the store and through her website www.vedazzlingaccessories.com. She also offers sustainable faux leather for her customers that want the feel of leather without compromising their beliefs.

Somehow, Velvet manages to balance her commitment to emerging designers and her need to flex her fashion muscle. With Vedazzling Accessories ranked number 5 out of 28 in Brooklyn shopping under the accessories category on Trip Advisor, this dynamo is encouraged and has her eye on the future. Ideally, she’d like to find the right partner to open other Vedazzling Accessories Boutiques in the U.S. and abroad. After all, there are talented black designers all over the world who are just looking for a way to make their fashion dreams come true.

This past Sunday, October 2, we hosted our Let's Do Brunch! NYC meetup at Clyde Frazier's Wine + Dine (485 10th Ave). Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "The Rules for Life + Business" and our special guest was Brandon Slaughter, who spoke about his The Rules 4 Life project. The Rules 4 Life is part social game, part collaborative scrapbook that allows you to write down thoughts on various topics. The book can also be passed around to others so they can include their take on life.

It was great to share our stories about the rules we've learned along the way.

Here are the topic questions that were discussed for you to think about:

What are some golden rules you live by?
What rules have you learned during your entrepreneurial and/or professional journey?
What do you wish you could tell your younger self about life?

{Recap} Fashion for Brunch: A Chat + Chew with Author Lorenza Brown

Nzinga Basir, Jamillah Johnson, Lorenza Brown, and Sully Ann Guerra

On Sunday, May 31, we hosted a chat + chew for women interested in starting or growing their own fashion business with Lorenza Brown at Pampano (209 E. 49th Street, NYC). Lorenza is the author of "How to Create the Fashion Designs of Your Dreams" and owner of Lorenza Brown Consulting. Lorenza offered great advice on working with manufacturers, sourcing fabrics, and pricing. She stressed the importance of knowing who your ideal customer is. Most people make the mistake of thinking they'll start a business and that everyone is their customer. WRONG. Before you even think of setting up your business, you should know who the person is you're designing for.

If you are looking to start your own or grow your fashion business, please visit www.lorenzabrownconsulting.com for more information about her services. Her book can be purchased on Amazon.

Valentine's Day Confab - NYC Brunch Meetup (Recap)

“Your Crown has been bought and paid for. All you must do is put it on.” James Baldwin

This past Saturday, February 14th we hosted our signature brunch meetup during NBA All Star Weekend at Pennsylvania 6 (132 W. 31st Street). Our topic of the day was ReDefining A Woman's Worth. Our discussions included breaking down the characters of Cookie Lyon and Olivia Pope and how the media portrays a women on television and how we find balance between our business and personal lives while pursuing our dreams.

Here are a 4 tips to help you redefine your worth:

1. Be okay with being paid well – If you settle or expect less, you not only leave your potential on the table, but you leave a lot of money on the table as well.

2. Seek to become someone you admire – You are here to be your most valuable self and to express your gifts and talents fully. We need to surround ourselves with like-minded people who inspire, nurture and support us, while we give the same in return.

3. Be the architect of your life – We are not doing ourselves or anyone else a favor by having the wrong people like us for saying “yes” when we want say “no”.

4. Empowered Thinking - When understood and applied brings about positive change. Strive to make your situation better, making use of the power, skills, and resources that you have, as opposed to acting powerless in the face of a problem.

“When we place the power to define our worth in someone else’s hands, we are often told that we only want to be wanted. This artificial script leaves us with an extremely narrow role: to be a pleaser. If we accept society’s definition and remain disconnected from our authentic desires, our lives are drained of meaning, emotionally and financially. In this emptied state, we fail to take the initiative to negotiate higher salaries or raise our fees to match our true market value.”   Brooke Axtell, Forbes.com 2011

Thanks to everyone for coming and braving the cold weather and snow. Please join us at our next event on April 25th in Philadelphia. Details will be released shortly. Sign up to our newsletter to stay in the know!

At the conclusion of the event, Ashley posed this question to everyone at the table "Why are you enough?"

Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "3-2-1 Contract: The Importance of Having Agreements in Writing". As an entrepreneur, how important are contracts to your business?

Here are few quick tips:

1. All parties involved should come up with an agreement that is beneficial to everyone.

2. Require a deposit/Make sure you pay the required deposit for work to get started. This could be a 40-50% deposit due up front, with remaining balance due upon completion. Payment schedule will vary depending on the length of the project.

3. Shop around to find people that meet your budget or save up to hire the person you want.

4. If you can't meet your obligation, don't go dark. Communicate, apologize, promise to make it up, and set a new reasonable deadline.

5. Set up a cancellation fee in case you need to get out of the contract and include other protective clauses for deadlines, delays, etc.

Let's Do Brunch! NYC Fall Meetup + Hill Harper Book Signing Recap

L to R: Etophia Lane, Asha Johnson, Jamillah Johnson, Debbie Louis, Dana Thorbourne, and Tanya Johnson
(Please note that none of the Johnsons are related)

On Saturday, November 9th, we hosted our last meetup of 2013 at Lexington Brass (517 Lexington Avenue). Over brunch we discussed what it means to "Measure Your Own Success". Here are some questions that you can yourself.

As an entrepreneur/professional, how do you measure your success?
What factors do you feel have propelled your success?
What factors do you feel have deterred your success?

As 2013 draws to a close, it is important that we evaluate our progress. Have you met your goals that you set at the beginning of the year? If not, continue to work towards them. Time is constantly moving and while the new year feels like a new start, every second, every minute, hour, that we are on this planet is a chance to start or finish a goal. Here are some more useful tips:

1. Set resolutions throughout the year, not just for the New Year.

2. If you slack off, there's nothing wrong with picking up where you left off or starting over. What's important is that you keep moving forward.

3. Record your goals in a notebook so that you are able to map everything out as you see it in your head. Nothing is too far-fetched when putting this exercise into practice. You might not be able to accomplish a goal by next week or month, but it doesn't mean it won't ever be possible.

4. Be patient.

5. Create a list of short and long term goals. Things that can be accomplished sooner should get first priority. Research counts as working towards your goals.

6. Always do your research before pursuing a new venture. There's a chance your new idea is already in existence, but don't let that discourage you. It means that you have a good idea. It just needs to have your signature on it.

7. Take time out to examine your progress to appreciate how far you have come.

8. Measure YOUR success against YOUR OWN success. With social media we are in constant contact with what your peers are doing and it can become competitive whether we realize it or not. Take what you see online with a grain of salt.

After brunch, Etophia and I headed to Brooklyn to attend a book signing and discussion with bestselling author and "Covert Affairs" star Hill Harper. His latest book is entitled "Letters to an Incarcerated Brother: Encouragement, Hope, and Healing for Inmates and Their Loved Ones." I'm halfway through reading and although Hill stated that anyone may find the book helpful, not just those in prison, I will vouch that a lot of topics discussed can be applied to those of us reluctant to start a business or take our business to the next level. Make sure you check out Etophia's article on Examiner.com.

Let's Do Brunch! NYC Summer Meetup Recap

L to R: Toosdhi Perry, Christina Barker, Jovanka Ciares, Tanya Brown, Cathy Jones, Jamillah Johnson, Etophia Lane, Kenya Murray, and Velvet Lattimore

On Sunday, June 30th, we hosted our fourth New York meetup at The Liberty NYC (29 W. 35th Street). Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was on "Social Networking: Balancing Your Business & Personal Life Online." While we don't share what was discussed in detail, as always we will share a few tips:

  • Use Discernment – certain personal views shouldn’t be shared online with the world and could have an impact on your professional life.

  • Consistency is Key -- Your brand personality says a lot about you. Make sure you keep your tone, word choices, and response time consistent with your audience.

  • Don’t engage in negative conversation about competitors or leaders in your industry online. If you need to vent, speak with a close friend in confidence.
  • Balance your self-promotion by promoting and helping others. This will make your followers more receptive to your promotional posts and more likely that they will pass it along.
  • If you ever get in the position that you feel the need to defend a negative comment or criticism, don’t react right away. Take enough time to remove the venom from your thoughts before responding, if at all. Remember silence is golden and the online trolls will starve.
