Our topic of the day was "Tapping Into Your Magic" and I just wanted to share some helpful tips that were discussed at the table and here they are:
1. Stop worrying about things that don’t matter or that you have no control over the outcome.
2. Connect with what you already have inside of you. Whatever dream you have, know you came fully equipped to make it a reality. If you feel you lack the skills, you have the ability to acquire whatever it is you need.
3. Live an inspired and authentic life by being who you truly are and doing things that make you feel good.
4. Trusting in your dreams will help you let go of self-doubt. For every negative thought, think of two positive ones to shut that down.
5. Don’t Panic – Evaluate your current progress not where you want to be in five years. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself with how much further you need to go.
6. Failure is not the end - Think like a 1 year old – when you couldn’t walk, you fell, got back up, and tried again and again until you mastered it.
7. Focus on what goes right – Things will always not go according plan, but think of all the times things have worked out for you.
8. Don’t listen to other people’s negative opinions concerning your goals, unless that opinion is advice to improve your chances of a successful outcome.
9. Work for your dreams and be persistent.
10. Nothing is new under the sun. Read about those that came before you, and charter your own ship.
Bonus Tip: Just go for it and see what happens. You won’t know the outcome unless you try. Take a big goal and break it into segments and conquer each one, one at a time.

This past Sunday, June 8th, we hosted our signature Let's Do Brunch! meetup at Red Owl Tavern (433 Chestnut Street).
Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "Save Me Olivia Pope: When Entrepreneurs Are in Crisis" which addressed the best ways to cope with our personal issues and still effectively run our business. It's important to not let the obstacles and challenges that we must go through in life keep us down. Also consider creating a crisis plan and think of solutions that could help you get through problems that could impact your ability to operate effectively. Here are a few tips:
1. Cultivate an identity apart from your
company. Your self-worth cannot be measured in net worth.
2. Take time out to do something you enjoy.
Constantly renew yourself and your perspective – by reading, learning new
things, etc.
3. Economic crises are the biggest challenge
that businesses face. They can cause serious hardships so have a plan in place
to respond to these conditions.
4. Set a limit on how much of your own money
you’re prepared to invest in your business and don’t let friends and family
kick in more than they can afford to lose.
5. Know when to check out. Take time for
yourself when necessary. Also take a digital vacation away from checking email and
checking into social media to recollect and reflect.
6. Maintain your temple with cardiovascular
exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep.
7. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when in
need. Be emotionally honest with yourself. If your thoughts are getting you
down don’t ignore them. Keep a journal or blog about it. Just don’t bottle them
up so much that they become dangerous. Seek out professional help if necessary.

On Sunday, January 26th we kicked off our 2014 meetup season in Philadelphia at Square 1682 (121 S. 17th Street). Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "Sexism and the Female Entrepreneur" which sparked a great conversation over lunch with everyone sharing their experiences and coming up with solutions.
We also discussed Pantene's commercial from the Philippines that went viral receiving over 37 million views on YouTube, "Labels Against Women", that examines the double standards that exists in the workplace when it comes to professional women. Take a look.

On Saturday, November 9th, we hosted our last meetup of 2013 at Lexington Brass (517 Lexington Avenue). Over brunch we discussed what it means to "Measure Your Own Success". Here are some questions that you can yourself.
As an entrepreneur/professional, how do you measure your success?
What factors do you feel have propelled your success?
What factors do you feel have deterred your success?
As 2013 draws to a close, it is important that we evaluate our progress. Have you met your goals that you set at the beginning of the year? If not, continue to work towards them. Time is constantly moving and while the new year feels like a new start, every second, every minute, hour, that we are on this planet is a chance to start or finish a goal. Here are some more useful tips:
1. Set resolutions throughout the year, not just for the New Year.
2. If you slack off, there's nothing wrong with picking up where you left off or starting over. What's important is that you keep moving forward.
3. Record your goals in a notebook so that you are able to map everything out as you see it in your head. Nothing is too far-fetched when putting this exercise into practice. You might not be able to accomplish a goal by next week or month, but it doesn't mean it won't ever be possible.
4. Be patient.
5. Create a list of short and long term goals. Things that can be accomplished sooner should get first priority. Research counts as working towards your goals.
6. Always do your research before pursuing a new venture. There's a chance your new idea is already in existence, but don't let that discourage you. It means that you have a good idea. It just needs to have your signature on it.
7. Take time out to examine your progress to appreciate how far you have come.
8. Measure YOUR success against YOUR OWN success. With social media we are in constant contact with what your peers are doing and it can become competitive whether we realize it or not. Take what you see online with a grain of salt.

After brunch, Etophia and I headed to Brooklyn to attend a book signing and discussion with bestselling author and "Covert Affairs" star Hill Harper. His latest book is entitled "Letters to an Incarcerated Brother: Encouragement, Hope, and Healing for Inmates and Their Loved Ones." I'm halfway through reading and although Hill stated that anyone may find the book helpful, not just those in prison, I will vouch that a lot of topics discussed can be applied to those of us reluctant to start a business or take our business to the next level. On Saturday, September 28th, #100BusinessGirls celebrated our 2 year anniversary at Landmark Americana - University City in Philly. Over sangria and delicious food, we were elated to meet up with a group of dynamic women on the move. Our Business Girl topic of the evening focused on "Winning With Integrity". Here are some tips that were discussed at the event:
1. Honor your commitments and obligations. People want to do business with those they trust. Make sure you are a person of your word. Keep your appointments, show up on time, complete your projects, and most of all communicate with your clients.
2. Make sure your clients communicate with you and hold them accountable for their actions.
3. Don’t let friends, family, or clients jeopardize the reputation of your business. Monitor your Facebook tags and Twitter mentions, sometimes your personal circle doesn’t factor in your branding when sending personal invites or uploading photos. Also be careful about referrals.
4. Don’t be afraid to walk away. As entrepreneurs, a lot of our business is dependent on others and if we’re delivering the goods on time, we need to be paid for services – on time. Have all of your agreements in writing prior to starting any work. Never be afraid to drop clients who are disrespectful, high maintenance, or contract violators, etc. But before you end on bad terms, please refer back to tip #1 and #2.
5. Remain involved in community-related issues that fall in line with your beliefs. You want to be seen as a community contributor and you want to stay involved, so choose something you are really passionate about.

On Sunday, April 28th, we held our fifth Philly brunch meetup at SoleFood (1200 Market Street) and had our largest turnout to date. There were a diversity of industries represented from education, fashion, insurance, online media, and public relations. We continued the discussion from our New York session on how women represent themselves in business. Each attendee was asked to apply it to their own business and industry and we gained many different perspectives. By HAVING PATIENCE you:
• Become meticulous and attentive to important details.
• Think logically and use more common sense.
• More likely to be prepared and have goals in place.
• Understand your strengths and weaknesses.
• Will be able to establish your resources and needs and know how to manage them.
IMPATIENT people are:
• Much more impulsive.
• More likely to jump to conclusions.
• Make hasty decisions that ultimately cost their business.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
• Have a healthy dose of AMBITION to establish your goals.
• Take the necessary steps towards those goals and evaluate along the way. Some will yield success and some may go horribly wrong and that is okay.
• Take action! Don’t get stuck and never give up. You can always come back to a goal if it wasn’t accomplished. Having patience will help you take those steps.

Today marked our third meetup in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. We chose Landmark Americana located in University City (34th & Market) as our spot of choice. As always brunch was filled with inspiring stories and thought provoking conversations on women billionaries, the real deal with incorporating your business, and how we could all help Oprah with her network (you had to be there..smile!)
Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "Knowing and Loving Your Business: Being Prepared for the Next Level". The lack of preparedness of women entrepreneurs was the main focus. Here is a peek at our tipsheet for those unable to join us:
1. Always Be Prepared
Be prepared to improvise. Have a plan B and C lined up and always do your best. Don’t give up without trying.
2. Become the strategist your business needs
Sometimes we can’t always afford to outsource. Spend time researching and learning new technology and techniques that will help your business and your knowledge base grow.
3. Know when its time to ask for help
We can’t do everything ourselves. Know when its time to seek interns to handle the major little things. If you are in need of a professional, ask someone you know experienced in an area you need assistance in and barter your services in exchange for their help. Collaborations are a brilliant way to help someone else while helping yourself.
4. Know Your Numbers
If you’re seeking out investors, know the value of your business. If you offer products or services, never sell yourself short. Love your business enough to know it NEEDS money in order for it thrive. Place the oxygen mask over your face first.
5. Know when its time for a break
Always take some time out to relax, relate, release, and refresh. Whether it’s a weekend, a day, or 30 minutes. Take some time out to recharge your creative juices.

We kicked off our first meetup of 2012 on what had to be the coldest day of the season thus far. But that didn't stop the wonderful ladies that came out to meet and eat at Supper located at 926 South Street in Center City Philadelphia. This was our most diverse and experienced group that we've had thus far from Dianna Montague, the first woman to be certified as an Ironworker in the City of Philadelphia to Thomasene Gee, owner of Tommie's Passion Parties. That was just the tip of the iceberg.
Our Business Girl topic of the day "Definition of a Business Woman" brought many points of view as we discussed how we are definining our business and the challenges faced as being a women in male-dominated industries.
Here are just a few quick tips:
1. Think Strategically - Look at something from more than one point of view
2. Personal Branding - Don't be afraid to reinvent yourself. Have more than one stream of income.
3. Initiate - Act without being told.

1. Being fearless doesn't mean being reckless, but it does mean being bold and taking chances.
2. Fear will always be there. Do it anyway.
3. You don't have all the answers. It's okay to ask for help. Seek advice when needed.
4. Be fearless about communication. The word "no" is your friend and only wants what's best for you. Never be afraid to use it.

Today was our first Philadelphia brunch meetup and it turned out to be another great day of connecting, building, and exchangining ideas and resources. Lots of information was shared that sparked plenty of "aha" moments. One of the great things that comes with developing the 100 Business Girls concept is being able to reach people directly. There's no shade in sharing.
Our Business Girl Topic of the Day was "Branding Yourself and Your Business Online." We each shared ways we have all built up our online presence and which strategies were most effective in building up our audience.
Here's our Top 5 online branding tips that were discussed:
1. Your username is your identity. Select a name that is simple, memorable, and marketable.
2. Make relationships with others before you need them on social networks.
3. Connect with old friends and business colleagues.
4. Discover new people through researching and learning, and follow them on social networks.
5. Create online profiles that portray you in a professional light.
